Local Writer Participates in a Write-a-thon

Local writer Ada Milenkovic Brown, the coordinator of the Greenville Writer's Group, is participating in the 2009 Clarion West Write-a-thon. Clarion West is a nonprofit literary organization which provides high level training in writing speculative fiction, which includes genres such as science fiction, fantasy, magic realism, horror and alternate history.  Ada attended the Clarion West Writing Workshop in 2005.  Her stories have appeared in Intergalactic Medicine Show and PodCastle and her humor in the Raleigh News & Observer.  She is pledging to write a chapter a week for 6 weeks of her dark fantasy novel in progress, Men of Blood, beginning June 21 with chapter 2.  Chapters 1 and 18, which she had previously written as short fiction, have both received honorable mentions from the Speculative Literature Foundation.

If you would like to sponsor Ada by donating money to Clarion West for the training of spec fiction writers, you can do so online: www.clarionwest.org/events/writeathon/AdaMilenkovicBrown.

The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney - August show

Our second summer theatre production is The Dining Room.  The play is a drama as well as a comedy, set in a single dining room where 18 scenes from different households overlap and intertwine. Each story is focused around a different family during different time periods who has in their possession the same dining room furniture set, manufactured in 1898.  Some scenes are about the furniture itself, and the emotional attachment to it, while other scenes simply flesh out the culture of the kind of people who tend to own these kinds of dining room sets. Overall, it tells the story of the dying culture of upper-middle class Americans, and the transition into a much more efficient society with less emphasis on tradition and more emphasis on progress. Some characters are made fun of, as is the culture itself, but there is also a genuine longing for the sense of stability, comfort and togetherness that the culture provides.

Show dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday July 31, August 1, and 2, then the following Thursday, Friday, and Saturday August 6, 7, & 8.  All shows are at 7:30 except Sunday which is a 2:00 matinee only.  Performances are at the Music Academy of Eastern Carolina, 1400 Red Banks Road in Greenville.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.  You can purchase tickets online, or you can call 888-MAC-EVNT and leave a message with your name and number and we will return your call.  There is currently not a physical location to purchase tickets.
